As a running tour leader, I'm frequently asked, 'What does the running scene in Porto look like?'
Well... ever-changing, of course. But right now, this is what it looks like: here's a short overview that includes a seasoned race organizer, a tiny-but-mighty running tour company, and the recent emergence of extremely dynamic running clubs! RunPorto is turning 30: A Legacy of Endurance.
Porto, a city rich in history, has cultivated a vibrant running culture over the years. Let's start by highlighting THE key player in this thriving scene: RunPorto.
Runporto, founded in 1994 by Jorge Teixeira, has been at the forefront of Porto's running scene. Having started with the iconic S.Silvestre race, the organization has grown significantly, to the point that 2024's edition has attracted over 15,000 participants from more than 50 countries. RunPorto has established itself as a major player in the local and international running community, offering a platform for athletes of all levels to participate in dozens of challenging and rewarding events all year round.
A More Personalized Approach: The Rise of Running Tours.
In contrast to the large-scale events organized by RunPorto, a new breed of running tourism has emerged in the last decade. This sector, represented by smaller, more intimate companies, focuses on providing personalized experiences for runners.
These tours cater to smaller groups or even individual travelers, offering customized itineraries that explore the city's unique running routes while incorporating local culture and history. Porto Running Tours' team is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2025 and we're very proud to be part of the local running ecosystem but also a member a global network of independent small scale operators that goes by the name of RunningTours.net.
The Impact of New Running Clubs
While small running groups of friends have been around for years, and Parkrun is yet to make its grand entrance into Porto's running scene, some new running clubs have emerged, captivating the attention of younger generations.
These have brought a fresh energy to the Porto running scene, fostering a strong sense of community and encouraging social interaction among runners. Some runners find it a healthier alternative to the typical dating app experience ;)
Clubs like Milesnadvibes_RunClub, Porto.CanRunClub and Porto Expat Runners organize weekly training sessions, social events, and community outreach programs, further solidifying their position as key contributors to the city's vibrant running culture.
A diverse Landscape
These various organisations, the established race organizer, the personalized tour operators, and the dynamic new running clubs, all contribute to Porto's diverse and thriving running scene. There's something for every runner!
âWhether you are seeking the thrill of a race, the tranquility of a personalized tour, or the camaraderie of a running club, Porto offers a unique and rewarding experience for all! Share this post with a friend that needs to pack his trainers&visit Porto!
