We often hear the questions “where to do a long run in Porto / where do locals run in Porto? ” Almost as a reflex, our answer comes in a short and simple form: "by the water!" The city is limited to the south by river Douro and to the west by the Atlantic ocean, which means coastal and rather stable climate all year round. It also means that you have many kms of seamless running routes with truly inspiring scenery. Porto's annual marathon takes full advantage of this fact (see 2015’s route here ) and it actually binds together most of these sections, where locals complete most of 5 to 20km runs on their training plans. |
If you're staying in Porto's historic centre
just head for the iron bridge!
"Simply go to the iron bridge and start your run from there!" This is the best tip we can provide for most runners visiting and staying in Porto's city center.
Porto's historic center can be hilly and a bit confusing for a first time visitor so a good piece of advice is to look for the double deck iron bridge LUIZ I ( directions here ). Once you're by the bridge’s north side pillars, on the lower level, you can choose to 'run up river' or take the opposite direction, towards the river mouth, the Foz district. A great alternative is to cross the bridge and run west, towards the sea and the fishermen village of Afurada. No matter which way you choose, the sights are just beautiful and, in most days, you'll find that the steep surrounding hills will block any strong winds! --
