PORTO'S B-SIDE

OVERVIEW

Steam train's arrival in the late 1800's sparked the industrial growth and made permanent changes to what was once green pastures and leisure estates, the so called 'quintas' owned by wealthy merchants and noble families. Most factories are now down to ruins but  the 'ilhas', the densely packed factory workers' blocks, are still visible living remains of 100 years of thriving industrial activity.

However, Porto's eastern side isn't frozen in time: like the rest of the city, these two districts too have seen urban redevelopment and new projects, such as the on-going repurposing of the old industrial slaughterhouse into a corporate/cultural quarter, designed by the Japanese Kengo Kuma - same architect who signed the Tokyo 2020 Olympic stadium's project.

Highlights (in blue and in green):  we'll start off by running around the Estádio do Dragão (FC Porto's football stadium), learn about its genesis and why most Portuenses feel their heart is blue and white. We'll also be running through greener areas, along the Tinto river banks, briefly visiting the Bonjóia estate and exploring the municipal park 'Águas do Porto' with its impressive collection of fountains!
