Around 60 million people are estimated to run or jog in the United States. In Europe we have around 50 million people running, 6 million in Germany alone, the Netherlands with 2,4 million regular runners and, according to a Marktest study last year, Portugal with around 1.5 million natives 'saying they've engaged in some form of running activity at least once in the last 12 months'… 2015's Boston Marathon finish line - running community has huge numbers in the US Our opinion is that 1.5 million is an highly optimistic statistical estimate for Portugal. This is not to say that the Portuguese are dishonest when it comes to publicly advertising their sportive habits but, fact is, ‘once in the last 12 months’ is a bit short when categorizing someone as a runner, won't you agree? :-) SO What's the running scene REALLY like in Portugal?Nevertheless, running is now a very popular sport in Portugal: new races are advertised every month, a growing number of informal running groups and the presence of a ‘running section’ in most of the media are all symptoms of how vibrant this community has become in this tip of Europe! Being a safe country and having a great climate all year round, plus being easy, cheap and virtually possible anywhere, it’s only predicable that the vast majority of the 10 million resident Portuguese will take up running in the near future… imagine... a whole nation of slender, energized, strong runners…! :-) Wishful thinking a side, the city of Porto has hard numbers to present. More than 4.500 people finished the full Porto Marathon last year and thousands other registered and finished the 16km race, on a beautiful flat course by the sea and along the river. We'll be posting soon about races and other running events in Porto and North of Portugal, please stay tuned!
